Cosmic Strings in Low Mass Higgs Cosmology

    Get PDF
A class of grand unified theories with symmetry breaking scale of order 1016GeV10^{16} GeV have a Higgs particle with mass in the TeVTeV scale. The cosmology of such theories is very different from usual. We study the cosmic strings obtained in such theories. These strings are much fatter than usual and their mass per unit length is reduced, resulting in a significant reduction in their cosmological effects. We also study the temperature evolution of such models.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

Old Collections, New Insights: Technological Organization of the Lungren Site (13ML224), A Middle Archaic Residential Camp

    Get PDF
The Lungren Site (13ML224) is a Middle Archaic campsite located in Mills County, Iowa. The site was excavated in the 1960s during the Smithsonian River Basin Surveys, and represents one of a relatively small number of well-preserved Archaic period sites known in western Iowa. Lithic artifacts from the Lungren assemblage were reanalyzed as part of this thesis in order to derive better understanding of technological strategy and land-use by the mid-Holocene bison hunters who left these tools behind. Analysis of lithic debitage and raw material illustrates heavy utilization of locally acquired raw material for tool making. This includes both expedient and formal items that comprised a specialized tool kit well suited for a population of mobile bison hunters. While the Archaic period in many areas of the Great Plains remains poorly understood, data from this thesis will be useful in developing a better understanding of technological strategy and lifeways of peoples on the Eastern Plains during this time period

Should Georgia Change Its Misdemeanor Arrest Laws to Authorize Issuing More Field Citations? Can an Alternative Arrest Process Help Alleviate Georgia\u27s Jail Overcrowding and Reduce the Time Arresting Officers Expend Processing Nontraffic Misdemeanor Offenses?

This Article analyzes whether the legislature should change Georgia\u27s arrest laws to authorize the discretionary issuance of field citations to more nontraffic misdemeanor offenders as a means to help alleviate jail overcrowding and reduce the amount of time required by patrol officers to process misdemeanor arrests. This Article includes a review of current Georgia law concerning citation arrests for nontraffic misdemeanor offenses; published literature; a quantitative analysis of the effects of using the field citation process upon officer processing times and the failure to appear rate within the Gwinnett Judicial Circuit; surveys of Georgia law enforcement executives; and interviews with court administrators, a jail commander, and numerous arresting officers

SAGE III on ISS Lessons Learned on Thermal Interface Design

    Get PDF
The Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III (SAGE III) instrument - the fifth in a series of instruments developed for monitoring vertical distribution of aerosols, ozone, and other trace gases in the Earth's stratosphere and troposphere - is currently scheduled for delivery to the International Space Station (ISS) via the SpaceX Dragon vehicle in 2016. The Instrument Adapter Module (IAM), one of many SAGE III subsystems, continuously dissipates a considerable amount of thermal energy during mission operations. Although a portion of this energy is transferred via its large radiator surface area, the majority must be conductively transferred to the ExPRESS Payload Adapter (ExPA) to satisfy thermal mitigation requirements. The baseline IAM-ExPA mechanical interface did not afford the thermal conductance necessary to prevent the IAM from overheating in hot on-orbit cases, and high interfacial conductance was difficult to achieve given the large span between mechanical fasteners, less than stringent flatness specifications, and material usage constraints due to strict contamination requirements. This paper will examine the evolution of the IAM-ExPA thermal interface over the course of three design iterations and will include discussion on design challenges, material selection, testing successes and failures, and lessons learned

    Generic Current-Carrying Strings

We investigate the standard model in a cosmic string background and show that the electroweak symmetry is partially restored. For a range of parameters the electroweak Higgs field can wind in this region, producing an electroweak string stabilised by the cosmic string background. In this case there are quark and lepton zero modes that result in the string becoming superconducting at the electroweak scale. If the electroweak Higgs field does not wind, there are no zero modes, but there are fermion bound states. These bound states can also carry a current.Comment: 8 pages, TeX, 5 postscript figure

Boxing and mixed martial arts: sociocultural cues, ego enhancement, and aggression

    Get PDF
This work explores two sports in the world of fight media, boxing and mixed martial arts. Employing the use of social cognitive theory, cultivation theory, and critical race theory as the frameworks from which the following analysis is based, this research positions prizefighting as a sports culture in need of communicative examination. The present study investigates how the representation of concepts such as religiosity, hypermasculinity, and physical violence permeate these two sports. A content analysis examining a total of 46 pre-fight press conferences taking place between 2012 and 2017, all derived from Home Box Office (HBO), Showtime, and the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) was conducted. There were a variety of variables that proved to be significant in analyzing differences based on the racial/ethnic representation in the press conference, and the fight type. Some of these findings include Black fighters being overrepresented as displaying physical materialism as well as familial responsibility as compared to chance expectations. Additionally, White (non-Hispanic) fighters were overrepresented as perpetuating verbal aggression, a finding that was also significant for fight type; with mixed martial arts being overrepresented and boxing being underrepresented.Includes bibliographical reference

Western Kentucky University Stormwater Utility Survey 2023

The main goal of this survey is to identify as many U.S. Stormwater Utilities (SWUs) as possible. Because many stormwater professionals do not have the time to respond to questionnaires, our primary method of identification was Internet searches. We searched key terms such as “stormwater utility”, “stormwater fee”, and “drainage fee”. We scoured online municipal codes such as Municode, AmLegal, Sterling, LexisNexis, General Code, and others. We searched through many city web websitesing to find utilities. We have also had many people contact me to update fees and identify new utilities. However, the data primarily comes from Internet sources and is prone to errors. Some community websites are not very clear on whether the fee given is monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, or annually. In cases like that, we made the best guess we could. We hope the readers of this document will continue to help us correct mistakes. However, it is difficult to keep up with fee changes in more than 2000 utilities, so if you discover errors in our data please contact me at [email protected]
